I had a lot of fun working on this one, from going out to the forest to see the trilliums begin to bloom to being back to working in color after completing the Timberline coloring book.

It's been a long, hard winter this year so signs of spring arriving were very welcome.

An absolutely stunning mixed media piece. The way the inspiration for this piece came about was Winter 2015 never really seemed to arrive. It was probably the warmest and the driest winter on record in my area. Originally I had set aside time in my calendar to go out and paint in the fields as the flower seasons arrived but realized when I went out in search of the trilliums in the forest which typically announce the beginning of spring with of the unseasonably warm winter temperatures, spring had arrived very early. I hurried to get pictures of what little trilliums there were and thought I had better quick check how the daffodils and tulips were doing. I discovered the daffodil season was already done - a full six weeks earlier than was typical. I barely caught the ribbons of color of the tulips still out in the field.

This piece was created using archival quality pigments, Sennelier watercolors and Caran D'Ache Luminance colored pencils on 140# Arches archival quality hot press cotton paper. The piece is mounted on an archival 1-1/2" deep Birchwood panel that has been sealed with archival quality sealant. The drawing was applied with archival quality glue. The sides are painted black and the entire piece is then finished with an additional four layers of archival quality varnish. As a part of your collection it will stand the test of time. Hanging hardware has been added to the back so it will arrive ready to hang.

Announcing Spring

"Announcing Spring"
4" x 6-1/2" - unmatted

Each year I go out looking for these beautiful, delicate jewels of the forest that announce the arrival of spring in my area. Their symmetry of threes: three petals, three sepals, three leaves gives them their traditional name "the trinity flower".

It was created on 140# hot press cotton paper using a watercolor base. The detail is developed with archival quality colored pencils.

The original drawing is available.
